Ursula von der Leyen celebrates Europe Day in Kiev

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is in Kiev today, 9 May, for Europe Day. The visit is symbolic as it takes place on Europe Day, which celebrates the European Union.

"It is good to be back in Kiev. Where the values we hold dear are defended every day. So it is such a fitting place to celebrate Europe Day. I welcome President Zelenski's decision to celebrate Europe Day here in Ukraine on 9 May", wrote the EC President on her Twitter page.

Traditionally, victory against Nazi Germany was celebrated on 9 May in Ukraine, as it is in Russia, but President Volodimir Zelenski decided to mark the victory on 8 May, the day Germany surrendered, and 9 May, Europe Day.
