Leaders of five pro-European parties sign a joint declaration on Europe Day

On the occasion of Europe Day, the leaders of several pro-European parties signed a joint declaration pledging to join forces to contribute to Moldova's accession to the European Union. At the same time, the representatives of extra-parliamentary factions also plead for the signing of a political agreement on the irreversibility of our country's European course.

In the Stable of Europe in the centre of the capital, several party leaders signed a joint declaration committing themselves to contribute to the acceleration of the process of Moldova's accession to the European Union. The initiator of the document, the president of the Coalition for Unity and Welfare, Igor Munteanu, also stressed during the event the signing of a national political act to make our country's European course irreversible.

"We, the signatories of this declaration, believe that the full and effective integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union can guarantee peace, dignity, security and well-being to our citizens. We urge pro-European political parties to concretely support and effectively participate in the process of pre-accession and preparation of the Copenhagen criteria. We support the commitment of the central authorities to undertake and implement structural and far-reaching reforms that will give credibility to the EU accession process", said Igor Munteanu.

Honorary President of the Liberal Party, Mihai Ghimpu, one of the signatories of the declaration, said he supports the European integration of the Republic of Moldova, but reiterated that the shortest way to this process is the union of our country with Romania.

"Moldova's place is with the civilised world within the EU and within Romania. Uniting with Romania is the safest and shortest way, because Romania is an EU member state and a NATO member state. In this case, we have the shield to live in peace, welfare and tranquility," Mihai Ghimpu said.

The document signed by the pro-European parties also stipulates the need for the Republic of Moldova to leave the Commonwealth of Independent States, the withdrawal of Russian troops from the Transnistrian region, the reintegration of the two banks of the Dniester River, and other issues.

On Monday, several political leaders of extra-parliamentary parties met at the presidency, at the invitation of Maia Sandu, to discuss the "European Moldova" National Assembly planned for 21 May. One of the topics of the meeting was the need to unify the efforts of pro-European political forces in order for Moldova to become a full-fledged EU member state.
