"Another Russian provocation". Georgian President reacts to Russia's decision to remove visas for Georgian citizens
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has reacted to Russian President Vladimir Putin's decree on lifting the visa regime and flight restrictions for Georgian citizens, calling it "a provocation".
"Another Russian challenge! Restoring direct air links and cancelling visa regime with Georgia is unacceptable while Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine and occupies our territory!" the Georgian president wrote on her Twitter account.
On 10 May, Vladimir Putin signed the decree on the cancellation of the visa regime for Georgian citizens.
According to the decree, from 15 May 2023, Georgian citizens will enter and leave the Russian Federation without visas on the basis of valid identity documents. An exception is made for "citizens entering for the purpose of employment or for a period of more than 90 days, in particular for the purpose of obtaining an education".
Another decree repeals the ban on air travel from Russia to Georgia, introduced by decree of 21 June 2019.
Russia suspended air traffic with Georgia on 8 July 2019, following an incident involving State Duma deputy Serhii Gavrilov.
