Canada is helping the Police of the Republic of Moldova with two million dollars, to strengthen security in areas with a large number of refugees

Canada will support the Police of the Republic of Moldova through a new $2 million, 18-month project to increase the capacity to ensure security, especially in areas with a large number of refugees and migrants. The subject was discussed during yesterday's meeting, May 11, between President Maia Sandu and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The new project will contribute to the training, provision of equipment and technical assistance to the Police and will be essential to efforts to address security issues in communities with increased mobility, reads a press release published on the website of the Government of Ottawa .

Also, the Canadian Prime Minister announced that, through the Technical Assistance Partnership and in collaboration with the Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs in Canada, his country will send judges to the Republic of Moldova to share best practices that increase institutional capacity and to strengthen accountability and judicial integrity.

Furthermore, according to the press release, Canada announced its intention to establish a new set of sanctions regulations under the Special Economic Measures Act in connection with the war in Ukraine. These regulations will allow Canada to sanction individuals and related entities in our country who commit systematic human rights violations, endanger international peace and security, or who have engaged in significant acts of corruption.

In this context, the Prime Minister of Canada reiterated his support for internal institutional reform efforts and the anti-corruption agenda of the Republic of Moldova, as well as his support for integration into the European Union.
