The Pashinian-Aliev-Michel trilateral meeting opened in Brussels

The trilateral meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pushinian, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and the President of the European Council Charles Michel has started in Brussels. The parties will discuss a number of issues related to the draft peace treaty, the settlement of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The talks between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pașinian and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev are taking place under the auspices of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. The meeting, the fifth of its kind in the framework of European mediation, began shortly after 13:00, said the spokesman for the President of the European Council, reports Agerpres.

Charles Michel held bilateral meetings with the Armenian prime minister on Saturday evening and with the Azerbaijani president on Sunday morning.

The talks come a day after fresh clashes on the border between the two Caucasian countries. Yerevan announced on Friday that one Armenian soldier had been killed and two others wounded by Azerbaijani forces. On Thursday, an Azerbaijani soldier was killed and four Armenian soldiers were wounded in other clashes.

The two Caucasian countries clashed in two wars in the early 1990s and in the 2020s over control of the enclave, a mountainous region largely populated by Armenians that broke away from Azerbaijan three decades ago.

Tensions, already high, doubled when Baku announced on 23 April that it had set up a first road checkpoint at the entrance to the Lachin corridor, the only axis linking Armenia to the breakaway enclave already subject to a months-long blockade that has caused power shortages and outages. Armenia considered this a violation of the ceasefire negotiated with Azerbaijan.
