Maia Sandu, meeting with ECHR President: "Moldova continues to advance in international democracy rankings"
The role of the ECHR and the Council of Europe in achieving reforms and bringing Moldova in line with best practices in justice were discussed today by Moldovan President Maia Sandu and ECHR President Siofra O'Leary on the margins of the Summit in Reykjavik (Iceland).
"We will continue our good cooperation to strengthen institutions in our country. Moldova continues to advance in international democracy rankings, which shows our firm commitment to developing a society where justice prevails," said President Maia Sandu.
The President of the Republic of Moldova is attending the fourth Council of Europe Summit.
On the sidelines of the meeting of heads of state and government, Maia Sandu met with senior officials of Council of Europe member states. The head of state spoke about Moldova's modernisation efforts in the context of European integration and received assurances that European states continue to support Moldova.
During the meetings with European officials, the situation in the region was also discussed, as well as security challenges in the context of the war in Ukraine. Maia Sandu reiterated Moldova's commitment to contribute to maintaining peace and security in the region.
Iceland currently holds the presidency of the Council of Europe.
