General elections in Greece for the formation of the new government

Greece is holding general elections today for the formation of the new government. Analysts warn that it is unlikely for a clear winner to emerge in the first round of voting. If the parties do not agree on a coalition, the country's president can order the formation of a provisional government until the next elections, according to Mediafax.

While opinion polls have placed the conservative party "New Democracy" in the lead, the change in the country's electoral system makes it unlikely to achieve an absolute majority.

Polling stations opened at 7:00 AM local time throughout Greece and will close 12 hours later. Just under 10 million Greeks are expected to vote.

In case no party wins decisively, the President of Greece will grant the top three parties a three-day mandate each to form a government.

If they all fail, the President of Greece will appoint a provisional government that will lead the country for one month until the next elections.
