Politicians and businessmen from Moldova and Russia have been included in a list of sanctions approved by EU ambassadors in Brussels

European Union Ambassadors in Brussels today approved the imposition of a new sanctions regime on five politicians and businessmen from the Republic of Moldova and Russia who destabilise the situation in the Republic of Moldova. They traditionally involve an asset freeze in the European Union and an entry ban.

The European Union is for the first time applying a new sanctions regime for destabilising the Republic of Moldova. The German publication refers to a document proposed by the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, which involves sanctions against five people: the leader of the Șor Party, Ilan Șor, the deputy of the same party, Marina Tauber, the fugitive businessman and former politician Vlad Plahotniuc, the leader of the PACE Party, Gheorghe Cavcaliuc, and the Russian businessman Igor Ciaika, considered a close associate of the former president and leader of the Party of Socialists, Igor Dodon.

These individuals are the targets of several criminal cases in Moldova, but the only one in the country is Marina Tauber.

A formal decision will be taken by the European Council on 30 May, an EU official told Deutsche Welle.

On 28 April, the Council of the European Union adopted a new sanctions regime for destabilising Moldova. It allows for the introduction of restrictive measures against persons who commit actions undermining the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Moldova.

Brussels stressed that attempts to destabilise the Republic of Moldova have become more frequent since the beginning of Russia's war against Ukraine and pose a direct threat to stability and security at the external borders of the EU.
