EU doubles financial assistance to Moldova

The European Council decided today to double the amount of macro-financial assistance to the Republic of Moldova that was agreed a year ago. In April 2022, legislation was adopted allowing the EU to financially assist the Republic of Moldova with €150 million. This amount was increased today by €145 million, which means that an amount of €295 million will be available for our country.

"Moldova can still count on the EU. We will continue to support Moldova, including financially. Given the current circumstances, it is appropriate to double the funds we are making available to Moldova," said Swedish Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson.

Of the total amount, the EU will provide up to €220 million in loans and up to €75 million in grants. The assistance will help cover our country's balance of payments needs as identified in the IMF programme.

According to a European Council statement, the negative effects of Russia's war in Ukraine are spilling over into the Moldovan economy.

This Decision will enter into force on the third day following its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
