NATO will monitor Moldova's skies as more than 40 European leaders attend a summit near Ukraine's borders to show support for both countries as Kiev prepares a counteroffensive against Russia's invasion, Reuters reports, citing Mediafax.

The meeting of the 27 EU member states and 20 other European countries at a castle deep in the Moldovan wine country, only 20 km from Ukrainian territory, represents a security and organizational challenge for a neighboring country.

NATO Air Warning and Control System (AWACS) surveillance aircraft will monitor the skies above the summit venue until Friday, the alliance said in a statement.

Remnants of missiles from the war in Ukraine have been found in Moldova several times since the Russian invasion 15 months ago.

"NATO AWACS can detect aircraft, missiles and drones hundreds of kilometers away, making them an important early warning capability," NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said.
