Roberta Metsola: For us, Moldova's place is in Europe
European Parliament (EP) President Roberta Metsola called for Moldova to start negotiations on EU membership this year after the European Political Community summit. As for the existing hybrid dangers, she said that "all risks and threats to a country's sovereignty must be tackled by all of us".
"For us, the European Parliament, as we were the first institution to say without any hesitation that the Republic of Moldova must be a candidate state for EU membership, Moldova's place is in Europe. Of course every country has its own way, but as far as time is concerned, let's start accession negotiations this year," said Roberta Metsola.
"I am very happy to be here, I think we can be very proud of Maia Sandu's leadership and not only for bringing us all here, but also for getting this full commitment of support, help and joint actions for the future", said the EP chief.
The EP President stressed that it is essential that the Republic of Moldova combats the hybrid threats that exist.
"It is very important to help combat these dangers and risks, but ultimately we must not forget that they are common challenges, ever since 24 February last year when Russia decided to invade Ukraine. All risks and threats to a country's sovereignty must be fought by all of us", said the President of the European Parliament.
