In the event of an escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, Romania cannot provide military support to the Republic of Moldova, given its NATO membership, but it could help with equipping or training military personnel.

The statement was made yesterday, 1 June, by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis at a press conference held during the European Political Community Summit.

"Romania is in NATO and Moldova is a neutral state, so I don't see purely military ways for us to intervene in a conflict, but we can intervene to improve the personnel in Moldova, to train, to help with equipment and so on. So, there are many ways in which we can and do intervene to help Moldova", said Klaus Iohannis.

The Romanian President also referred to the process of Moldova's accession to the European Union, saying that it is complex and depends on the sustained effort of the authorities in Chisinau.
