Jens Stoltenberg to visit Turkey: Sweden's NATO accession on the agenda
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will visit Turkey on 3-4 June. On Saturday, he will attend the swearing-in ceremony of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, who won a second term in office in the 28 May presidential elections, an Alliance statement said.
Jens Stoltenberg announced on Thursday his intention to visit Ankara to promote the ratification of Sweden's accession to NATO. He said he had already spoken to Recep Taayip Erdogan on the phone earlier this week to "stress the importance of making progress" on the Nordic country's accession.
Turkey and Hungary are the only NATO countries that have not yet ratified Sweden's membership application. Finland formally joined the alliance in April.
