President Klaus Iohannis hopes that Romania will join the Schengen Area this year
The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, hopes that his country will join the Schengen Area this year, especially since it has made sustained efforts to contribute to securing the borders of the European Union, Radio Romania News reports.
While in Germany, Klaus Iohannis spoke again about Romania's belonging to European values, which gives legitimacy to the citizens' desire to benefit from Schengen integration.
"We have prooved both solidarity and the ability to protect the external border of the European Union. At the same time, Romania showed once more that it fully meets the criteria for integration into the Schengen Area, managing the external borders with responsibility and efficiency. A decision in favor of Romania's accession to Schengen this year will represent a very important signal for our citizens of belonging and trust in the common European project", declared the leader from Cotroceni.
On Sunday, in Frankfurt, the head of the Romanian state will receive the Franz Werfel prize for human rights, conferred by the Center against expulsions. On Saturday, Klaus Iohannis received the German Civic Award from the Bad Harzburg Foundation, in recognition for the democracy and civic commitment in Romania.
