Child poverty rate increased in 2022. Authorities say they are making efforts to solve the problem
The poverty rate among children increased last year, compared to 2021, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics. Given that, in 2022, the poverty rate of the population as a whole was 31%, children are poor in proportion to 28 percent or 4 percentage points more compared to the previous year. In order to improve social services for children, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection is making constant efforts, said the relevant minister, Alexei Buzu.
"All the programs that we implement at the Ministry are seen through the lens of this central objective. For us, the programs we implement to reduce child poverty are divided into two categories. First of all, we want to make sure that we help children and families with children in poverty through the social assistance system. This means that we must have the ability to identify these children, to understand their needs, and be able to offer them the basic support so that they can overcome risky or complicated situations", explained Alexei Buzu.
Statistical data also show that in 2022 there were 539 thousand children in the Republic of Moldova. They represent over 20 percent of our country's population. Last year, 27 thousand children were born, of which about 52% were boys.
