Maia Sandu: The list of persons sanctioned by the EU for destabilizing actions in the Republic of Moldova is open
The list of people sanctioned by the European Union is open, and when additional evidence appears about the current actions of some people who participate in destabilizing actions or want to draw the Republic of Moldova into war, these people risk ending up on this list. The statement was made by President Maia Sandu on Monday, June 5, during a press conference.
"It is an ongoing process. When evidence is collected, this evidence is sent to the European institutions, and the European institutions examine and make decisions," the head of state said.
Asked why Veaceslav Platon was not included in the list of EU sanctions, Maia Sandu answered that this question should be addressed to the European Union.
We remind you that on May 31, the member states of the European Union adopted sanctions against seven people from the Republic of Moldova, accused in particular of having links with "Russia's efforts to destabilize" the country, which is economically very fragile. The decision was adopted just two days before the Summit of the European Political Community (EPC), which brought together 50 leaders of European states.
The list includes: the leader of the Şor Party, Ilan Şor, the deputy of the same formation, Marina Tauber, the fugitive businessman and former politician Vlad Plahotniuc, the leader of the PACE Party, Gheorghe Cavcaliuc and the Russian businessman Igor Ciaika, considered a close friend of the former president and the leader of the Socialist Party, Igor Dodon, the Moldovan politician and leader of the Party of Regions from Moldova, Aleksandr Kalinin, and the controversial businessman, president of the IFAVIS Foundation, vice-president of the Russian Federation of Free Fights and assistant to the senator for the Kursk region, Grigore Caramalac.
The assets of the seven individuals concerned will be frozen in the EU, where they will be banned from staying. This decision "sends an important political signal regarding the EU's support for the Republic of Moldova in a difficult context (...) We will continue to punish those who destabilize our immediate neighborhood", said the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell.
The political agreement on the creation of the sanctions regime was obtained at the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council on April 24, 2023, the process of adopting the regime being procedurally completed on April 28, 2023.
