Border Police marks 31 years of activity

The last three years have been very difficult for the Republic of Moldova, including for the Border Police, said Head of State Maia Sandu at the ceremony dedicated to the 31st anniversary of the institution. The president referred in particular to the management of the refugee flow caused by the war in Ukraine, but also to the pandemic period.

"More than one million Ukrainian citizens have crossed the borders of the Republic of Moldova. You were the first to meet them, guide them, encourage them. In addition to the challenges generated by the war in the neighbouring state, the Republic of Moldova is also the direct target of the hybrid attacks through which Moscow is trying to destabilise our country and thwart our European course. In this case, you are the first filter, the first line of defence in our national security system, it is you who bring the European Union home, working side by side with Frontex officers adopting EU practices", said Maia Sandu.

For his part, Border Police Chief Rosian Vasiloi listed the achievements of the institution in 31 years.

"In 1992, the state border security defence system was created. In 2001 we took over the Moldovan-Ukrainian border sector under guard after 10 years of independence, with no infrastructure, modest resources and insufficient personnel. 2003 - 2005 was the period when we started the digitization process. In 2010 - 2014, we did our best to ensure that all citizens could travel freely within the EU. We coped with the pandemic crisis. The year 2022 the outbreak of an unprovoked war by the aggressor state against Ukraine", said Rosian Vasiloi.

The Border Police of the Republic of Moldova was created on 10 June 1992 following a decree signed by then President Mircea Snegur.

The total length of the state border is 1,906 kilometres, of which 955 kilometres - land and 951 kilometres - water.

Currently, the Border Police employs around 3,000 people.
