Prime Minister of Canada on unannounced visit to Kiev

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski on Saturday on an unannounced visit to Kiev, CNN reports. The officials signed a Joint Statement confirming Canada's support for Ukraine.

"I welcome Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his team representatives to Ukraine," Volodimir Zelenski said in a Telegram post.

The two leaders issued a joint statement after the meeting, saying that "the Ukrainian people can count on Canada to continue its political, financial, humanitarian and military support for as long as needed - individually and through international cooperation in the G7, NATO, the UN and any other forum where Canada can have an input."

As of February 2022, Canada has announced more than $8 billion in "large-scale" assistance to Ukraine, the statement reads, adding, "Canada is providing unprecedented military support, including tanks, air defence systems and artillery, and continues to develop new assistance measures as Ukraine's needs change."
