Many analysts believe that his army is testing the Russian defences built within months.
The Institute for the Study of War has reported that while it appears that Ukrainian forces may have had some localised victories, they are working hard to break through Russian positions.
Both sides have repeatedly stated that they inflicted massive casualties on the enemy. These claims are difficult or impossible to verify. Ukraine's Deputy Defence Minister claimed that Russia used the flood caused by the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam to move some of its best combat units from the occupied areas of the Herson region to the active front lines.
