Construction of a new penitentiary could start at the beginning of next year, Minister of Justice
The works for the construction of a new penitentiary could start at the beginning of next year, and currently the authorities continue to work on its technical design, as there have been adjustments and additional costs, said on Radio Moldova's "La 360 de grade" show the Minister of Justice, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.
According to her, the new penitentiary will have a capacity of 1,050 places, although 1,536 were originally planned.
"The construction of the new penitentiary was established with the Bank of the Council of Europe, the European Bank that offered us a grant agreement. Last week I had a discussion with the Ministry of Finance and the prison implementation unit. We decided to redesign the future penitentiary from 1,536 places to 1,050, considering that the rate of inmates has decreased, and this is a positive indicator", said Veronica Mihailov-Moraru
The new penitentiary will replace the penitentiary Nb. 13, located in the center of Chisinau, and will be built on land on the outskirts of the city, near Bubuieci commune. Work was supposed to start last year, but the project needs to be revised.
For the first time, discussions about the construction of a new, modern penitentiary in Chisinau appeared back in 2008, when the parliamentarians of that time voted a draft law in this regard.
