The Greek government has described the deaths of more than 79 migrants as the biggest tragedy of its kind in Greece
The Greek government has described the deaths of at least 79 people in a shipwreck as the biggest migrant tragedy to occur in Greece. Several hundred people are still missing, the BBC reports.
The Greek government has declared three days of mourning to mark the deaths of around 79 migrants who drowned when the boat they were on capsized off the southern coast. About 100 people were rescued, but many others are missing.
A migrant aid organisation, Alarm Phone, estimates that about 750 people were on board the ship. The UN secretary-general said he was appalled by the loss of so many lives.
According to initial information from the authorities, the migrant ship left Libya for Italy.
