Italy will support the initiation this year of the negotiation process for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union, the vice-president of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Commission of the Senate of the Italian Republic, Roberto Menia, said exclusively for Radio Moldova. He was present at an event organized by the International Republican Institute . According to the official, the European course of our country was also discussed yesterday at the meeting of the Italian delegation with that of the Legislative in Chisinau, led by the Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu.
The Republic of Moldova counts on the support of Rome in the process of initiating negotiations with the EU until the end of the year, said the Parliament Speaker, Igor Grosu.
For his part, the vice-president of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee of the Senate of the Italian Republic, Roberto Menia, told Radio Moldova that Italy will fully support this objective, but that the final result depends on the steps that the Republic of Moldova will take.
"Obviously, the European accession of the Republic of Moldova was the topic discussed yesterday with the representatives of the Parliament. It takes a certain amount of time that the negotiation process could take place and depends on several factors. It is expected that, by December 2023, pre-accession negotiations to the European Union will begin, everything depends on the Republic of Moldova. The Italian side supports the European path of the Republic of Moldova, which takes place in several stages. We supported this country even before it became a candidate for the EU", said the representative of the Italian Senate, Roberto Menia.
We remind you that, previously, the head of the EU Delegation in the Republic of Moldova, Janis Mazeiks, said in the show " La 360 de grade" on Radio Moldova, that it is difficult to anticipate whether the EU will initiate accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova this year.
According to the official, the first test will take place in October, when the European Commission will produce a report on the progress made by our country in the reforms implementation. The final decision will be taken by the European Council in December 2023.
