Mircea Geoană: "If the Republic of Moldova reaches the decision to join NATO, we will be able to discuss this topic"

If the Republic of Moldova, in a profoundly changed geopolitical context, will draw its own conclusions and come to the decision that it would like to join NATO, we will be able, at that moment, to discuss this topic, but never, we make no assertions or statements of working assumptions. The statement was made by the Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Mircea Geoană in an interview for Radio Moldova.

"We know only one thing, as in Finland and Sweden this new geo-strategic reality led to certain decisions, in Chisinau it will lead to certain decisions too. The sovereign decision of the Republic of Moldova to choose its path and place under the sun. If this time in history has any importance for you and me, Sweden has been neutral since 1812, Finland somewhat more recently. So, once again, NATO will never go against the sovereign will of a European state and lobby to come to NATO", said Mircea Geoană.

We remind you that in May 2022, Finland and Sweden, two traditionally neutral Scandinavian countries, being concerned about the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, decided to join NATO. Finland officially became a member of the NATO defensive military alliance on April 4, 2023, being the 31st member of NATO.

In the case of Sweden, Turkey and Hungary are the only NATO countries that have not yet ratified its application for membership. Turkey claims that Sweden, in particular, is the country of destination for militants of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, banned by Ankara. Turkey also wants authorities in Stockholm and Helsinki to take a tougher line against the party and another group it accuses of plotting a 2016 coup.
