Jens Stoltenberg: NATO will contribute to the modernization of the Ukrainian army
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg promised that the North Atlantic Alliance will provide additional aid to contribute to the modernization of the Ukrainian army at the summit in Vilnius on July 11-12, DPA and Agerpres report.
In a statement published today by the German daily Tagesspiegel, Jens Stoltenberg said that at the meeting in the capital of Lithuania, NATO member countries will adopt a multi-year assistance package to bring Ukraine up to NATO standards in terms of equipping the army.
The senior allied official added that the Alliance's aid will help the Ukrainian military transition from an army based on the old Soviet model to a modern force operating in line with NATO standards.
Jens Stoltenberg also said that, after months of military training with NATO equipment, Ukraine is recapturing its territory that fell into the hands of the Russian invaders. He stressed the importance of ongoing support for Ukraine, a country in a defensive struggle against the Russian aggressor who launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022.
NATO's secretary general highlighted the difficulties of the counteroffensive, including landmines planted by Russian forces.
