What are the authorities’ actions to attract low-cost airlines to the Republic of Moldova? The details of deputy Radu Marian

High airport fees are one of the reasons cited by the airlines, which do not want to operate flights in our country, Radu Marian, deputy, president of the Parliamentary Commission for Economy, Budget and Finance, told Radio Moldova. According to him, the Republic of Moldova has one of the highest airport taxes in the region, and the reduction of the tax will attract new low-cost companies, therefore, the price of tickets will also be reduced. Radu Marian said that the airport tax of 9 euros will first be reduced and then canceled on January 1, 2024, and other fees are to be reduced as well.

"The airport has already presented a new formula of reduced airport taxes. The upgrade fee of €9 will be gradually reduced, it will be halved from 1 July and then eliminated from 1 January 2024, but there are other fees as well. At the moment, airport taxes at takeoff per passenger are approximately 21 euros, after July 1 they will be 16 euros, and then on January 1 they will be 12 euros. This upgrade fee discount will also be subject to discounts depending on the number of passengers carried by the company and the number of new routes created. Taxes will be able to drop below 12 and below 10 euros. This is the offer we present now. With the reduction of these taxes, more airlines will operate flights, especially the low-cost ones", said Radu Marian.

Radu Marian also added that a new tariff policy has been developed, which could reduce airport taxes for airlines by up to 70%. We remind you that the Chisinau International Airport was concessioned in 2013 to a company that would have been affiliated with the fugitive politician Ilan Șor, convicted in the case of stealing the billion. At the end of March, it returned to state administration.

In recent months, however, the number of flights operated from the Airport has been significantly reduced, after a low cost company gave up flights, citing security reasons, and a local one suspended flights for financial reasons.

The authorities claim that they are in talks with several airlines to bring them to the Republic of Moldova.
