The number of passengers traveling to the European Union by plane increased by 35 percent last year compared to 2020, show data from the European Statistics Office . An almost double increase in the number of passengers was also recorded at Chisinau International Airport.

Last year, more than 370 million passengers traveled by air in the European Union, which means an increase of 35 percent compared to 2020, according to data from the European Statistics Office (Eurostat). All member states of the EU block, with the exception of Finland, registered an increase in the number of passengers who traveled by plane last year. Among the countries with the largest number are Croatia, Cyprus and Greece, followed by Latvia, Sweden and Ireland. In Romania, more than 10 million passengers were registered, an increase of about seven million compared to 2020. An increase can also be seen in the Republic of Moldova. In 2021, the number of travelers has doubled, the head of the Public Relations section of the Border Police, Raisa Novițchi, told Radio Moldova. According to her, Chisinau International Airport is the most requested crossing point of the state border, and estimates show that the number will increase in the coming period. "Almost two million people crossing. In 2020, taking into account that it was the beginning of the pandemic, and the Chisinau International Airport stopped its activity, there were almost a million. I think there will be more crossings this year. By the end of November there were already over two million". Data from the European Statistics Office also reveal that before the pandemic in 2019, there were approximately one billion passengers who traveled by plane in the European Union. Thus, comparing these data, last year the number of passengers decreased by more than 60 percent.
