MEP: I believe there is stability in the Republic of Moldova, the possibility of making a medium and long-term plan and a vision of the future

The Republic of Moldova is on the right track in terms of meeting the conditions established in the opinion for granting the status of a candidate country for accession to the European Union, said MEP Corina Crețu in an interview, referring to the European Commission's report. In her opinion, the negotiations could start by the end of this year, after which the Republic of Moldova will be able to receive pre-accession funds.

MEP Corina Crețu stated that the start of accession negotiations depends on the results of the Report that the European Commission will present in October. In the meantime, she says, it is necessary to consolidate all political forces, as happened in Romania in 1995, with the adoption of the Snagov Declaration.

"We support the option of a decision favorable to the start of accession negotiations as soon as possible. I think it is the best time after this summit that took place in Chisinau. After this summit, the Republic of Moldova has this duty to make use of these results and this solidarity that the entire European Union has shown to your country. Now I believe that there is stability in the Republic of Moldova, the possibility of making a medium and long-term plan and a vision of the future. This is very important not to deviate from. So, it depends on the Republic of Moldova to know very clearly that it needs investments in infrastructure in the standard of living of the people", declared the MEP.

Corina Crețu also mentioned that a European consensus for the Transnistrian region could be the special status within the Republic of Moldova, which, however, must be decided and negotiated in Chisinau. However, this does not mean that the stages of European integration should be interrupted, the MEP concluded.

We remind that in the preliminary report of the European Union it is mentioned that three of the nine conditionalities have been fully implemented. These refer to changes in the electoral legislation, the involvement of civil society in the decision-making process and ensuring the protection of human rights. Good, but not sufficient, progress was also made on the other commitments. In the case of the reform of the justice system, which represents the first conditionality of the European Commission, EU officials have acknowledged progress, but further recommendations concern ensuring the efficient functioning of the Supreme Court of Justice and the appointment of a general prosecutor with full powers.
