A two-day EU summit begins in Brussels: The war in Ukraine and economic security - on the agenda
In Brussels, the two-day summit of the European Union begins, which has numerous issues on the agenda, as well as a moment of balance in the transition from the Swedish presidency of the European Council to the Spanish one, reports Rador.
Among the topics of the meeting, in which the president of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, is also participating, are the situation of the war in Ukraine and the help given to Kiev in the face of invading Russia, economic security and the phenomenon of migration. The Council will begin with a discussion with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on the issue of Ukraine, arms supplies, as well as the Alliance summit in Vilnius. The discussion also comes against the background of the Wagner insurrection, and the NATO and Community states are corroborating information for the best possible assessment.
The President of Ukraine will also have an intervention. Related to this topic, but not on the same day, member states will see what steps have been taken or have to be taken for the European arms industry, what is the status of joint contracts and what the deliveries to Ukraine look like. The last figure was 250,000 shells delivered.
A discussion will follow with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, on pending files. An extremely complicated one is the nature restoration law, but also packages aimed at the economy, competitiveness, digitization or security. In tandem with these discussions will be the topic of returning to good governance practices, which means, for Romania, for example, a budget deficit below 3%, an emphasis on investments, revitalization of the PNRR, cautious taxation and the elimination of aid for bills. And if we come to the budget, the Commission has just asked for an extra €66 billion for a clean economy, for Ukraine and for migration as part of the multiannual budgetary framework.
