Mexico: At least 100 people have died due to the heatwave

At least 100 people have died over the past two weeks in Mexico due to heat, as temperatures soared to nearly 50 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country, the Health Ministry announced, Hotnews.ro reports.

A three-week heat wave this month has strained the power grid due to record demand, forced authorities to suspend classes in some areas and many Mexicans have effectively suffocated.

More than two-thirds of the deaths occurred during the week of June 18-24, the rest in the week before, the ministry said in a report on the extreme temperatures. Only one heat-related death was recorded at the same time last year.

In recent days, temperatures have dropped as the rainy season has brought much-needed precipitation. However, some northern cities are still experiencing high temperatures. In the state of Sonora, the town of Aconchi recorded highs of 49 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
