MEP: Moldova's progress shows it is ready to start EU accession negotiations
The significant progress made by the Republic of Moldova in fulfilling the European Commission's 9 conditionalities proves without a doubt that our country is ready to start EU accession negotiations by the end of the year, MEP Siegfried Mureșan stressed today in a video message. For her part, President Maia Sandu said that the authorities are making every effort to start accession negotiations as soon as possible, in order to become a full member of the European Union by 2030.
MEP Siegfried Mureșan today called on the European institutions and EU countries to start the process of pre-accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova by the end of this year. The official stressed that our country has achieved remarkable results in some areas mentioned in the 9 recommendations of the European Commission.
"Important reforms have been achieved in justice, in the protection of human rights, in the fight against corruption. These results can be seen throughout Europe. The progress shows that Moldova is ready to start EU accession negotiations in certain areas. Here we will need support from the EU, from the Member States, but we will give you this support. My appeal to the European institutions, to the EU Member States, is the following: by the end of this year, let's start negotiations for Moldova's accession to the EU on those chapters where it is ready", said Siegfried Muresan.
President Maia Sandu, in an address to young people, stressed that the European Union is an essential instrument of peace and well-being. The head of state reaffirmed our country's firm commitment to becoming an integral part of the EU bloc by 2030.
"We are working to obtain a decision to open negotiations as soon as possible. I strongly believe that the Republic of Moldova can become a member of the EU by 2030. This means that we must do our homework, reform the justice system, have institutions that sanction corruption, no one will welcome us into the European Union with a corrupt system," said Maia Sandu.
Earlier, Janis Mazeiks, head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, told Radio Moldova's "360 degrees" programme that it is difficult to predict whether the European Union will start accession negotiations with Moldova this year. According to the official, the first test will take place in October, when the European Commission will report on our country's progress in implementing reforms. The final decision will be taken by the European Council in December 2023.
