European Parliament chief: We want EU bloc countries to agree to open EU accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine by the end of this year
The European Parliament wants EU bloc countries to agree to open EU accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine by the end of this year. A decision is expected to be approved by the European Council in mid-December, European Parliament head Roberta Metsola told a press briefing after the European Council summer summit in Brussels.
The head of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, praised our country's progress on its European path. She also expressed confidence that European leaders would take a positive decision on the start of accession negotiations this year.
"There is a clear position in Parliament that accession negotiations must start this year and I hope that the December European Council will be the place and time where this step could be taken. The Republic of Moldova is on a very solid pro-European path. This needs to be recognised and is already recognised by the European Parliament, but also by this institution", said Roberta Metsola.
Representatives of the European Union met on Thursday and Friday in Brussels for the European Council, where they discussed EU enlargement. It should be recalled that the Republic of Moldova, together with Ukraine, was granted the status of candidate country for accession on 23 June 2022. In order to start the actual negotiations for accession to the European Community, the nine conditions formulated by the European Commission must be met. According to the latest assessment, three of them have been fully met. The first progress report was presented in Brussels in April. The commission's final report will be prepared in the coming months, and the authorities hope that by the end of this year the EU bloc countries will agree to open accession negotiations.
