Coalition for Unity and Welfare calls for resignations after airport gun attack
The Coalition for Unity and Welfare (CUB) party is calling for the resignation of the heads of the Border Police and the Ministry of Internal Affairs after the incident at Chisinau International Airport, which resulted in the death of two people. The announcement was made at a press conference by CUB President Igor Munteanu. So far, representatives of the Border Police and the Interior Ministry have not come up with an official reaction to the statements made by representatives of the Coalition for Unity and Welfare.
This tragedy shows us that Moldova needs a strategic security partnership with Romania and the United States, said CUB President Igor Munteanu. According to him, the Coalition for Unity and Well-being Party advocates a strategic security partnership and is at the disposal of the authorities to discuss the proposals announced today.
"In the airport, but also in other institutions, on road routes, but also in other strategic points, until this moment, the necessary measures provided for by the legislation in force, special plans to fight against terrorism are not taken so that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova can be safe. And this depresses citizens. We, the Coalition for Unity and Welfare, demand the resignation of the heads of the Border Police and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, after such unprofessionalism and failures. We demand the adaptation of the training process of the employees of the Ministry of Interior, IGPF, SIS to the standards of the new security threats", said Igor Munteanu.
So far, representatives of the Border Police and the Interior Ministry have not come up with an official reaction to the statements made by representatives of the Coalition for Unity and Welfare.
On Friday evening, Interior Minister Ana Revenco condemned the tragic attack and sent condolences to the bereaved families. And Border Police Chief Rosian Vasiloi said that the Border Police will provide all expenses for the funeral of the border policeman. He also sent condolences to the bereaved family and said he would increase police control at the airport.
On Friday, 30 June, a Tajik citizen killed two people and injured another after he was denied entry to Moldova.
According to the authorities, while accompanying him to the sterile area to be turned back, he shot dead a border policeman and an airport security employee with a weapon stolen from a border police employee.
The assailant was captured by the Lightning Special Purpose Brigade and is in serious condition in hospital. He faces life imprisonment for his crimes, said Acting Prosecutor General Ion Munteanu.
