Russian diplomats evacuated from Romania by aircraft sent by Moscow. It landed exceptionally in Bucharest
Forty employees of the Russian embassy in Bucharest, together with their family members, some 80, have left Romania after the country's authorities requested a reduction of the diplomatic mission's staff, Russian state media reports.
The plane that came to pick up the diplomats took off more than six hours late. According to Digi 24, the delay was caused by luggage that could not fit in the hold of the aircraft.
The Russian plane landed exceptionally on Saturday morning in Bucharest. Russian planes are not allowed in EU airspace as a sanction for the war in Ukraine. However, the Bucharest authorities have made an exemption for the aircraft, which could pick up embassy staff and their families who have been declared undesirable. The flight was approved by the Ministry of National Defence at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
