Damage from the riots in France amounts to almost €300 million
Damages from street fighting in France caused by the killing of an Algerian teenager by a policeman amount to about 280 million euros, French insurers said, having received nearly 6,000 claims so far, Bloomberg reports.
According to French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire, insurance agencies have agreed to extend the period in which shop owners can file claims for compensation from five to 30 days.
Night riots broke out in France on 27 June, the day of the death of the 17-year-old Algerian teenager shot dead by a policeman in the Paris suburb of Nanterre after refusing to submit to a traffic stop. Over a week during the protests, 5,000 cars were burned and 1,000 buildings damaged.
In the 250 attacks on police and gendarmerie stations, more than 700 members of the security forces were injured. Nearly 3,000 young people - many of them minors - were arrested.
