Romanian President Klaus Iohannis will attend the NATO Summit in Vilnius. The official will reiterate his "robust" support for the Republic of Moldova

President Klaus Iohannis is attending the NATO Summit in Vilnius, Republic of Lithuania, on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Presidential Administration informed on Friday that at the summit, which is taking place at a critical moment for Euro-Atlantic security, in the second year since the beginning of the Russian aggression on Ukraine, the allied leaders will assess the implementation of the decisions adopted at the meeting in Madrid in 2022, when the Strategic Concept in force was also adopted, with an emphasis on strengthening the allied deterrence and defense posture, reports Agerpres. An important objective also aims at political and practical support for Ukraine, as well as making concrete progress towards its accession to the Alliance.

According to the Presidential Administration, Klaus Iohannis will emphasize the fundamental importance of continuing to implement the decisions from Madrid regarding the strengthening of the allied deterrence and defense posture on the Eastern Flank. At the same time, the Leader from Bucharest will reiterate his strong support for Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. "President Klaus Iohannis will point out the importance of the decisions of the allied meeting regarding the adoption of a package to strengthen the allied position on the Eastern Flank, in the long term, in a position to offer our country a higher degree of security and defense. The head of state will also reiterate the robust support for Ukraine, including in terms of realizing its accession to NATO, as well as for the most vulnerable partners, especially the Republic of Moldova. During the summit, the President of Romania will support the reflection, in the allied documents and decisions that will be adopted, of the importance of the Black Sea region for Euro-Atlantic security", according to the Romanian President's administration.

According to some official sources, "the decisions adopted in Vilnius will provide Romania with a higher level of protection and defense, will solidly anchor the Romanian state in the Allied deterrence and defense architecture and will concretely demonstrate the character of the region of strategic importance for the Black Sea Alliance".

The series of results at the NATO Summit also includes the fact that, for the first time, in the press release of the meeting, the efforts of the Republic of Moldova on the road to European integration are appreciated. And also for the first time, a minister from the Republic of Moldova is invited to participate in the ministerial session of an Alliance Summit. In the relationship with Ukraine, the Summit will establish two key results, namely a consistent political package that will anchor this country in the Euro-Atlantic accession process and contribute to its political integration in the North Atlantic Alliance, namely an allied commitment to maintain long-term consolidated practical support.

We remind that the Summit in Vilnius is the first in which Finland participates as a member. The meeting will also validate the global dimension of the Alliance through the participation of the leaders of Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.
