Valeriu Sainsus: The demographic situation in the country can be recovered if effective state policies are implemented
The demographic situation in the Republic of Moldova, which is currently unfavourable, can be recovered in 7-8 years if effective state policies are applied, demography expert Valeriu Sainsus told Free Europe. In his opinion, in the medium term, it is important to return to families with two children, and from a long-term perspective, the state should give priority to families with three children.
"The country is facing major demographic problems - depopulation, the reproduction crisis, excessive migration and, last but not least, demographic ageing, because this creates profound problems in the context of the demographic balance of generations within the population. Economic development must be demographically supported, and demographic support is lagging behind, or better still the country remains in a deep demographic decline, while demographic trends remain rather bleak in the long term."
According to the National Bureau of Statistics data on the demographic situation, in 2022 there were 18,200 registered, down 10.4% - compared to 2021 and 9,600 divorces, down 3.4% compared to the previous year.
