In the hot season, ANSA urges consumers to check food more carefully to avoid food poisoning

The National Agency for Food Safety (ANSA) warns consumers of the risks to public health if they buy food from unauthorised places, especially roadside.

Purchasing food from unauthorised places where sanitary rules and thermal storage regimes are not respected makes consumers more vulnerable and more exposed to food poisoning, ANSA explains.

"The sun, the heatwave and perishable foods are one of the most dangerous combinations during this period. Spoiled drinks and food, together with insufficiently washed fruit and vegetables, dairy products, meat, fish and eggs, can cause food poisoning, the symptoms of which are felt within hours of consumption."

To avoid situations in which people may purchase non-compliant products, they are advised to check the smell, colour and appearance of the product. ANSA also points out that vegetables and fruit sold in unauthorised open-air shops affect the quality of the products.

The Agency also warns consumers not to keep food in cars for long periods of time. After purchase, they should try to reach their destination as soon as possible to store them as indicated on the packaging.

The State Hydrometeorological Service has issued a yellow heat code for the whole country. The warning takes effect today and will last until 18 July.
