UN: Majority of Ukrainian refugees, more than 75 percent, want to return home

More than 75 percent of Ukrainian refugees hope to return to Ukraine, but only about 15 percent plan to do so in the near future, data from the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights shows, based on a large-scale survey conducted in April-May.

Most refugees planning to return to Ukraine in the next three months are from the Mykolaiv and Chernihiv regions. Fewer want to return to eastern Ukraine, with the exception of the Kharkov region.

In the future, about 67% of those displaced to other countries want to return. The hope of return is higher among citizens who left Zaporozhye, Herson and Dnepropetrovsk regions. Refugees staying in countries neighbouring Ukraine are more likely to return than those living in other European countries (71% compared to 57%).

Among the reasons preventing them from returning to Ukraine are: lack of security (47%), lack of job opportunities (31%), problems with basic infrastructure (22%), occupation of the region (11%).

More than 10 million people have fled Ukraine since the outbreak of war by the Russian Federation.
