President of the European Parliament supports the idea of Romania joining the Schengen Area in the first half of 2023

Romania should enter the Schengen Area in the first half of next year, and the citizens of this country should look to the year 2023 "with optimism", said the President of the European Parliament in an interview for Digi 24. She added that the entry into the Schengen area is "a right of the Romanians", not a gift.

"Instead of speculating which country blocked another country, let's seek unity to convince everyone that Romania has done its part, and now Europe must also do its part," said the head of the European Parliament. "I want to make sure that in 2023 we will succeed, because we have no alternative. In 2024 there are European elections. What will be our message to European citizens in Romania? Vote for the European Parliament, the home of democracy. My responsibility is to convince, but also to deliver. And I think it's time for Romania to enter Schengen. In the first half of 2023, Romania should join Schengen," she continued. Roberta Metsola is paying a two-day visit to Romania. She was received at the Cotroceni Palace by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and met with Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă and the presidents of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, Marcel Ciolacu and Alina Gorghiu. Today, Metsola will meet with young people in an event titled "Together we are Europe".
