White House says it does not support attacks on Russian territory
The White House has conveyed that it does not support attacks inside Russia, a statement that comes after two Ukrainian drones hit buildings in Moscow on Monday, Reuters reports.
"As a general matter, we do not support attacks inside Russia," White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre told a news conference.
Russia has announced harsh retaliatory measures against Ukraine after two drone strikes, including one near the defence ministry headquarters, in what it called a rampage of terror. Russia's defence ministry also accused Ukraine of a "terrorist" drone attack on Moscow on Monday after the city's mayor announced that two buildings had been hit and media reported that debris had been found not far from the ministry's buildings, Reuters notes.
Ukraine's Digital Transformation Minister Mikhail Fedorov yesterday confirmed the dawn drone strikes on Moscow and the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which has been illegally annexed by Russia since 2014, reports EFE. The Ukrainian minister added that Russian air defences and electronic systems are "less and less capable of protecting" Russian airspace, warning that there will be more such attacks in the future.
According to Agerpres, the Sunday night attacks on Crimea and Moscow come after Russia attacked the city and ports in and around the Odessa region almost daily. Following Sunday's rocket attack on that city, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski vowed to avenge what he called an act of Russian terrorism.
The last drone attack on Moscow took place on 4 July. Then the Kremlin authorities reported four Ukrainian drones were shot down near the Russian capital, according to the BBC.
