Combating violence against women: A specialized agency will be created in the Republic of Moldova
75% of women in the Republic of Moldova are subjected to various forms of violence, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics. To combat this phenomenon, a specialized agency will be created in the Republic of Moldova. Experts believe that preventing a single case of violence would cost the state budget several times less than providing assistance.
State policy should be a pro-active one, so that any form of violence is prevented and combated, not just detected, PAS deputy Marcela Adam said on Radio Moldova's "Spațiul Public" show. In this context, the National Agency for Combating Violence Against Women will be created in the Republic of Moldova.
According to the deputy, this will be an authority under the auspices of the Government that will develop policies and will monitor the actors involved in the process of combating violence in our country.
"This agency wants to be directly under the auspices of the prime minister, it demonstrates a special interest and an extremely serious attitude in relation to the mechanisms that should be adopted in relation to the eradication of the phenomenon of violence. We have every hope that this agency will directly contribute to deterring the phenomena of violence, but also to the improvement, so to speak, of the statistics, which is increasing", said the deputy.
At the same time, the director of the Women's Law Center, Angelina Zaporojan, stated in the same show that the reaction to a case of violence costs us much more than prevention.
Following a survey conducted in 2016 by the Women's Law Center, the assistance of a single case of domestic violence with the involvement of all direct and indirect costs amounts to 700 thousand lei, and preventing a case is 10 times cheaper. At the same time, she stated that in 2022, 24 women died as a result of acts of domestic violence.
"Every case where a victim has died is analyzed head to tail and the authorities have taken it very seriously to understand what is not working and what needs to be improved. Many things do not work and most often it is the culture of tolerance. The family does not support them when they decide to report the case", said Angelina Zaporojan.
We remind you that last week, the Parliament voted in first reading the draft law that provides for the creation of the Agency for the Prevention and Combating of Violence Against Women.
