Poland accuses Belarus of waging a hybrid war using Wagner mercenaries

Poland has accused Belarus of waging a hybrid war using mercenaries from Russia's private Wagner group. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said he had received information that Wagner fighters were very close to its border, reports the BBC.

The Polish government has received information that around 100 Wagner mercenaries have moved towards north-west Belarus, near the border with Poland and Lithuania.

Mateusz Morawiecki added that the Wagner mercenaries could pose as Belarusian border guards and help migrants cross into the European Union, or they could pretend to be migrants themselves in order to enter the European bloc. The Polish prime minister offered no evidence to back up his claims.

Poland and Lithuania, which have accused Belarus of trying to destabilise the EU by facilitating an influx of migrants, have erected protective fences on their borders with Belarus.
