Priorities of the Ministry of Education for 2024: Establishing an average of at least 7 for admission to faculties of pedagogy, to increase the prestige of the profession
The Ministry of Education and Research aims to increase the number of graduates of pedagogical faculties going into the education system to 500 people each year. "The situation today is less than encouraging. Of the thousand or so graduates of pedagogical faculties, less than 25 percent go to school. We aim to double this figure, starting in 2024," the minister said, outlining the Education and Research Ministry's priorities for 2024.
Dan Perciun said that several measures will be taken to achieve this goal, including the establishment of an admission average of at least 7 in pedagogy, in order to increase the prestige of the profession: "We think it is right that those high school graduates who have good results should go to pedagogy, so that afterwards we will have quality teachers in schools. At the moment, about 25% of those who enrol in pedagogy have an average of less than 7," said Dan Perciun.
At the same time, in order to increase the attractiveness of the faculties of pedagogy, it is proposed to increase the students' scholarships up to the level of the minimum wage, with the monitoring of the students' achievements during their studies.
Also, the allowance of 200 thousand lei for those who choose to work in the school will be differentiated according to specialties and the shortage of teachers that exist in the localities.
At the same time, compulsory classroom teaching will be introduced for pedagogy students from year 2. "It is often the case that it is only after graduating from the Masters that students have their first contact with a live classroom of students. We think it's appropriate that from year 2 onwards they have the opportunity to learn practical skills in the teaching process, not only during the internships but also throughout the year. In other words, we will implement a dual education model," said the minister.
Dan Perciun also said he would propose introducing a salary supplement for students who demonstrate additional skills, whether they speak a foreign language and hold a certificate, or demonstrate digital skills etc.
At the same time, the obligation to work in the education system will be introduced for those who choose to do a master's degree for free.
