Over 1,000 Ukrainian refugees are employed in the Republic of Moldova

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine and so far, about 1,200 Ukrainian refugees have found work in the Republic of Moldova. Most of them, more than 850, work in the capital, statistics show. Representatives of the central and local authorities say that there is good cooperation between institutions to ensure that as many refugees from the neighbouring country as possible are employed.

Refugees from Ukraine can be employed on the territory of the Republic of Moldova in any region where they have settled. In the city of Calarasi, some 14 refugees from Ukraine have been employed in the textile and sewing industries, said deputy mayor Vladimir Susarenco.

"We have several enterprises in the territory of Calarasi, which are related to work that women can do. This is light industry, tailoring of clothes, the so-called Codrianca enterprise, shoe factories, such as an Italian subsidiary operating in Călărași, the wine factory. At the moment, we have 25 registered, i.e. looking for a job from among the refugees and at the present stage we have 14 employees, who have already been to the Labour Force Office. We are open to go further, we are still working in this area."

There is good cooperation between central authorities and local institutions to ensure the employment of refugees from the neighbouring country, underlined Viorel Garaz, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitisation.

"Together with the local authorities, we have tried to identify ways that we can offer these people the possibility to easily integrate and find a way of life similar to the one in Ukraine. People who wanted to work we offered them jobs. We have talked to many businessmen from Ukraine who want to find an investment platform here in Moldova to continue their business and not to lose people from Ukraine who cannot work at home and we offer them this possibility."
