A new attack on Moscow: Two combat drones have been shot down

Russia's air defences shot down two fighter drones heading towards Moscow, the Russian capital's mayor announced Wednesday morning, amid a rise in the number of such attacks targeting the Russian capital, AFP reports.

"There was an attempt to fly over the city, of two 'fighter drones'. Both were shot down by our anti-aircraft defenses. One of the drones was shot down near Domodedovo, while the other was shot down near the Minsk highway," Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram, without giving information about the origin of the attack, Agerpres reports.

"At the moment, there is no information on casualties" related to the downed aircraft, he added, saying emergency services were on the scene.

Ukrainian drone strikes have been rampant on Russian territory in recent weeks, often targeting Moscow and the annexed Crimean peninsula.

Russia announced on Monday that it had shot down a Ukrainian drone in the Kaluga region, less than 200km southwest of Moscow, after destroying seven others last Thursday in the same region. On Sunday, the capital's mayor announced that a drone targeting the capital had been shot down by air defence forces.

According to local authorities, Moscow has been targeted by several drone attacks in the past week, including one that damaged an office building in the main business district, which was targeted twice within days.
