US-built Patriot systems are particularly valuable to Ukraine. According to Kiev, Patriot batteries have already intercepted Russian hypersonic missiles several times.

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski said on social media that the aid had been agreed with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. "Fulfilling our agreement will save thousands of lives of our people. We continue to work to strengthen Ukraine and protect it from Russian terror," President Zelenski wrote.

The new deliveries from Germany also include ten Bandvagn 206 multi-purpose tracked vehicles, six trucks with large-capacity semi-trailers and about 6,000 rounds of 155-millimetre calibre artillery smoke ammunition.

Germany also supplied machine guns, military goggles, binoculars and de-mining equipment.
