Hawaii wildfires: At least 89 people have died

At least 89 people have lost their lives in wildfires that have ravaged the island of Maui in the US archipelago of Hawaii, state Governor John Green announced Saturday, warning that the toll could rise, AFP and Agerpres reported Sunday.

"There are 89 deaths," John Green said. "It will continue to rise. We want people to prepare for it," he added.

Authorities have opened an investigation into the handling of the crisis. The island of Maui experienced numerous power outages and the 911 emergency number was not working in parts of the island.

The existence of multiple simultaneous outbreaks also divided firefighters' efforts, and in Lahaina, dozens of residents surprised by the fires had to dive into the sea to escape the flames, according to the Coast Guard.

The death toll exceeds that of the 1960 tsunami, which killed 61 people in Hawaii.
