Turkey sets new national temperature record
A new national temperature record has been set in Turkey, reaching 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) in the southeastern province of Hatay. The record was set in the Hassa district, which is one of the provinces severely affected by the February earthquakes.
The previous national temperature record was 49 degrees Celsius, set in the Sirnak province in 2018. The World Meteorological Organization has warned that there could potentially be new global and national temperature records as intense heat waves sweep across several regions of the world.
The heat wave in Turkey is expected to continue for several days, with temperatures remaining well above seasonal norms. The State Meteorological Service has advised people to stay cool and hydrated, and to avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
The heat wave is also affecting other parts of the world, including Spain, where temperatures have soared to 46 degrees Celsius in recent days. The World Meteorological Organization has said that the frequency and intensity of heat waves are increasing due to climate change.
