CUB says CEC regulation on public service announcements is 'abusive'

The Coalition for Unity and Welfare (CUB) has challenged a regulation by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) that would only allow media service providers and advertising distributors to broadcast public service messages that have been approved by the CEC during the electoral period.

CUB President Igor Munteanu said the regulation was "abusive" and would "favour certain electoral candidates". He said the CUB would consider all possible ways to challenge the regulation in court.

CEC Vice-President Pavel Postica said the regulation was in line with the law on advertising, which specifies that during the electoral period public interest messages are approved by the CEC.

The CEC approved the regulation at the beginning of August. The electoral period for the general local elections of 5 November 2023 began on 7 August. The election campaign itself begins on 6 October.
