EU and UNDP support water infrastructure in Moldova
1,000 smart water metres have been installed in 18 residential blocks in Ungheni municipality, Moldova, with the support of the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The metres, which cost about 80,000 euros, are equipped with remote data transmission modules that will allow water consumption to be monitored and billed more accurately.
Petru Scutaru, director of the municipal enterprise "Apă-Canal Ungheni", said the installation of the metres would increase the maintenance capacity of the water infrastructure and help to detect possible leaks.
"The metres also come with several other advantages," Scutaru said. "They can help to improve customer service by providing real-time data on water consumption, and they can also help to reduce water theft."
The metres were procured from sources provided by the "EU4Moldova: Key Regions" programme, which is implemented by UNDP and UNICEF.
The programme has also funded the construction of new sewerage networks in Ungheni, as well as a new aqueduct and a water reservoir.
The total investment value for these works is more than €470,000, including the local financial contribution.
